People of the River

The Great River is really more of an ocean that separates the outer lands from the inner lands where the World Tree resides.
The Chelone, Dolphins and Merfolk make up the bulk of river civilization.  They consist mostly of nomadic tribes but have many permanent villages near the cost.  The villages watch over nesting grounds and trade with humans for manufactured goods.

Villages

Merfolk villages usually have around a hundred resident merfolk with a visiting tribe that typically stays for a week and moves on, the next tribe coming within a few weeks to a month after.
They farm Kelp and seaweed and run fisheries for food with coral and oyster beds for decoration, materials and trade.  They shape the coral into dwellings, fences and other buildings. Young adult merfolk like to travel and often become sailors aboard human ships or join a wandering tribe.

Tribes

Each tribe is led by one Chelone elder, a dolphin pod (typically 30 to 40) and a dozen or so merfolk. These tribes will occasionally meet up for massive meets of dozens of tribes and often will stop at merfolk villages. Normally however they travel the river in a counter spinward direction (this helps them smell things from farther away) looking for food and protecting the river from Corruptors and Outsiders.
To lead a tribe the Chelone must have Spirit Talking Level 6+ [35] with younger and less experienced ones living in villages, with a tribe, or questing pods.

Questing Pods

These are young adults who group together to wander and learn as a rite of passage to adulthood. Typically a single chelone and a small pod of dolphins (3 to 10) and sometimes accompanied by merfolk. Questing pods typically last a few months to a year and than form a new tribe.

Corrupted Races
  • Fishmen: Scaled humanoids who were created from fish by Demons
  • Sharks: Bred to assist the Fishmen the sharks grew intelligent and somewhat independent.
Roane
  • Magic: College, Sea, Weather

Elves that live on the shores of the Great River.  Except for the different magic specialties they are mostly like forest elves.  They also possess shapeshift magic used to swim in the form of seals.
