AEON B-Team Season 8 Session 13 The End is Coming

Cast: The Nomads

  • Amie-Belle T. W. Lee aka Whisper (Played by Curtis): Cold War era super-soldier/spy that got put in the Freezer, because she got poisoned. After getting thawed out and cured she tried to back to work, and was given an “adjustment period”. Uncle Sam called 2 years later, with work… because once you’re in, you’re in for life. Tagline: “In and out without a whisper.” Absent
  • Beauregard K. “Bo” Ratnam aka Wirerat (Played by Brice): Technopath, inventor, and hacker. He specializes in co-opting enemy systems and tech assets. Tagline: “Nice tech – I’ll borrow that.
    • Stainless Steel Rat aka “Sir” (NPC Ally): Bo’s best friend and assistant. A sentient drone in the shape of a stylized shiny metal rat mindlinked to Bo. Specialties are rapid repair construction and modifications. Imagine if K-9 and R2D2 made a baby and it looks a bit like a rodent. Tagline: “Repairs and upgrades in progress”
    • Derrick K. Ratnam aka Ledgerdemain (NPC Ally): Spin doctor and media liaison for Project VANGUARD. Twin to Bo. Tagline: “Well, actually that’s not how it happened.
    • MIA Sentient AI made from recovered tech on a prior mission.
  • Rafe Hanlon aka Nyx (played by Chris D.): An umbrakinetic petty thief still on work release several years later, on his way to becoming a true agent and hero. Tagline: “We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.”
    • Layla A. de Blackburn aka Nox (NPC): CIA-trained child assassin all grown up to be Daddy’s Little Monster. Maybe a little mad. Argues with her shadow often. Tagline: “No, we shouldn’t do that…should we?”
    • June B. O'Neill aka Prodigy (NPC): Savant with hyper-intelligence that may have cracked the universal power-dampening conundrum. Fresh out of the Meraki Institute for the advanced and gifted. Extremely intelligent, but young (she's 16).
  • Vincenzo L. dePrezzo aka Threshold (Played by Rory): Doctor, Mathematician, and Scientist (yes, capitals) and Spatial Manipulator. Threshold can bend space like a pretzel, teleport, obliterate things, and has extraordinary senses. He’d rather be in a research lab than fight. Better known for his work with Doctors Without Borders, the United Nations, and disaster relief than famous battles. Tagline: “I can be there in a snap!”
  • Eleanor C. Bulli aka "Bubbles (NPC): Manipulates bubbles of energy, short range teleportation, can fly on the bubbles, use them for shields or attack and even see through them.
  • Grant L. Wojcik aka Fridge Boy (NPC): Can control ice/cold, but mostly the ability to create ice that explodes. 16 year old emancipated orphan, Our janitor.
  • Rudy A. Coldwater aka Gimmick (NPC): Mildly hyper-intelligent savant. Stutters. Makes very accurate guesses. Typical nerd, not yet 20. Wants to make a difference, assigned to support duties.
  • Summer Stratos aka Chain Jacket (NPC): Ferrokinetic
  • Vargas Manwell Tilium aka "Impulse" (NPC): Speedster.

Patrols and Intel

Each of the team went and managed their patrols, Threshold taking on extra night shifts to cover for Wans death. Wirerat is fully recovered from his injuries and working on several projects, including things to find and track the alien's and their portals.
Threshold goes to that store recommended to him for math materials. The guy drops hints he knows something but is not forthcoming and Threshold chooses not to press him after verifying he is not an alien. Threshold keeps closing portals but they just keep appearing and growing in number.
Lynch is convinced the end of the world is coming but we wont give up so easily.

We find out that our minds have holes in them, missing certain memories.  Wirerat thinks he can get them back but Lynch and Threshold feel its extremely unlikely.
Someone managed to remove mental and physical records of things they do not want people to know.
At the end a kaiju (not Godzilla) comes out of the bay through a portal and heads to wreck the city.  Thresholds Warp ability wont work near it, though his other powers seem ok and he uses his "long Step" ability to get to the base and let everyone know.

Prelude

The GM had us skip the planned capture of the alien due to time constraints, we only have two more session planned after this before starting the next campaign. So were on a tight window.
We probably would have spent over an hour over planning the capture and unless he was well prepared Nyx and Nox likely could take him out in a few turns.

Interrogation

We did not get much info from the alien, though Lynch gave us some. They are not really alien's but ancient beings who travel between dimensions and left earth long ago. They are back and plan on invading, though why is unclear.
They have Khyberic powers and superior technology so our odds of victory seem slim.

Planning and Discussion

We compared some notes, but no real plans made and agreed upon as yet.
Threshold got a talking too about copying some of the notes in the old Safehouse Lynch set up. Apparently just knowing the stuff is bad as that can be detected through the collective unconscious. Lynch taught Wirerat how to build a device to keep us out of the collectives unconscious he called the Numera.
We also got a better idea on how to look for the rifts and are adding that to our patrols.
Threshold can sense them if he is close enough. People can hear music if they get big enough and things can come through. Wirerat set up MIA  (his pet AI) to scan for flash mobs or reports of people seeming to hear music and certain tunes.  We will then pop over to check them out and Threshold can close the rifts, at least if they are small enough.

OOC

We got to see the spiderness from a previous campaign. Apparently they can be disintegrated just nicely. Wasn't sure if that would work on them. Threshold has not picked up on some things yet that I thought he would by now but the character does not know to ask about. So having to play dumb for now.
Session was kind of slow, lot of exposition and it had been a long time since the previous one so I think all of us were out of sorts.  Also knowing its all over in a few games might be having an effect.

Putting the Pieces Together

Nyx and Nox have been mulling over notes about August, including the deck of cards that were wrapped in orichalcum foil and dossiers and other reports. Nox made a crit fail in her roll of Intelligence Analysis and they pretty much were just stuck.
Whisper and Threshold noticed Nox feeling depressed and frustrated and assembled the team to try and go over the data. Figured a variety of skills and perspectives might give a fresher perspective.
With the cards in the lab we noticed under the UV light for the plants that the cards had pictures of people on them, previously hidden.
This was a GM gimmick to move the plot along and though that kind of thing is acceptable and frequent among fiction, especially comic books I felt it was not the best choice.  I hate contrived plot devices, even if they are sometimes necessary. In this case UV for plants triggered the image, meaning sunlight likely would too - not vey secretive. It could have been handled by one of Wirerats Scanners sensing something off or Threshold using his Scanning Sense (Para Radar with Scan and Bioscan). Either were very plausible as Threshold pretty constantly uses his para radar and scans the environment for things like toxic hot dogs or other exotic poison's Nyx may hide around the place, food Whisper sneaks into Bo, and general shenanigans around the place. Plus he had specifically looked at the cards before.  Alas I had almost mention scanning them to find which was the Queen when Nox was playing solitaire and said she needed it but opted not to say anything as Threshold felt she would not like to cheat.
(GM asks that we mention criticisms so he can get better, and when thinking of fixing a plot bump its not always obvious how. My rule is to review the players actions and abilities and see if there is anything that resolves the issue. Outside a game its easy to consider multiple options, during the game you're more likely to stop on the first one though)

Once we saw the pics we recognized several as local politicians and other VIPs. They looked like elves or some versions of Aliens.  Obviously the latter makes much more sense (Thresholds bias here). Threshold opted to check on a few of them, using his para radar which has 200y range, Penetrating 2 (see through up to 2 feet of walls), and the aforementioned Bio Scan and Scanning.
He confirms that the individual is indeed not human and checks 2 others just to confirm it wasn't some lucky glitch.
Reporting back to the group he asks for ideas. Whisper and Wirerat suggest kidnapping and interrogation, no one else has any ideas. Threshold chooses to try and do this legally and reaches out to  the President (Actually has as a Contact on costs CP) and gets a quick meeting.  He pops back to the group with permission to use our version of the Patriot Act and begin the kidnapping.

The Bricklayer Arrives!

While we are going over the above and doing some other household discussions the Bricklayer knocks on the door.  The City has paid for our repairs and renovations as a reward for stopping Erebus (yay we get recognition! Now if it gets cited in a good journal somewhere Threshold will be ecstatic).
The Bricklayer is doted on by Whisper who tends to him with home cooking and he fixes the place up. We now have our nice comfy super base in a firehouse.

Afterthoughts

A bit short but not too bad. It had been several months since our last game session (Early Oct and this was Dec 11th) and we all were a bit rough on our feet as to recollections.  Thankfully our note keeper helped review things, though he was a bit under the weather.
Space Cat is acclimating to the group, I think he has decided to take on annoying Wirerat as a pet project as cats sometimes do. Molerat was quiet and did not come up in the session, probably still hiding in Thresholds couch. Threshold really has to scan the place a lot to keep these ruffians (PCs) from getting away with their practical jokes and other tricks.
I think we all had fun and it was kinda cool using a Contact I never actually expected to use in the game. It was more intended as background and a possible plot hook.

Post Conflict

Its been a week since we stopped Erebus from destroying NYC and stealing a bunch of powers from the metas in the area. With the darkness dispelled reinforcements and supplies are arriving into the city, people can go back to work, and overall things getting back to normal.
Rikers Island is still under siege with prisoners holding a cellblock, using many guards as hostages. Threshold and Wirerat offer to help repair some of the damage and for the Nomads to go in and rescue the hostages.  Between our teleporters and all the stealth we can bring to bear Threshold thinks the team can take care of that situation but HQ denies us on either.
Instead we are told to patrol our area and mainly relocate prisoners captured by other teams to secure facilities.
Threshold talks to the crystal skull he got and it gets annoyed with him and teleports him all over the universe, doing a bunch of damage in the process.
It did not like being called a computer, and when Threshold asked it about the possibility of it being captured by someone and forced to do their bidding it opted to show off and make a point.
It's telepathic voice comes off as fatherly, unusual choice for an AI personality.
* The Player knows the history of the Crystal Skulls in the campaign but Threshold is a pragmatic scientist. He does not believe in the supernatural, so will take some convincing to accept they are what the player has been told. The GM was perhaps mildly annoyed at his stubbornness - nothing new there though :)
Threshold goes into his office and finds a giant mole buried in his couch. It has been there about two days, but Threshold was busy in the labs and the field. After a brief examination and discussion the team decides to keep it around for observation and see what happens.  We recently picked up two sapient dogs, and have those squirrels hanging around so are becoming quite the zoo.
Though with tensions between Wirerat and Nox going down, its possible the squirrels will go away and stop appearing in the base. Especially if we get that wall patched up!

Space Cat

Then of course there is Space Cat.
Space Cat has been kept unconscious since its capture almost two weeks ago. Threshold gives it a though medical exam (Medic!; Pararadar with Bioscan, Microscopic, Penetrating; and some other abilities) and determines its sentient (which we figured from the fight). It was used by the bad guys as a clone of Threshold so he kind of feels attached to it (unlike the screaming head that was also a clone of him) and it was raised and controlled by villains.  He feels its unfair to lock it up and the authorities might treat it as an animal and simply euthanize it. He talks it over with the team and takes it to the roof where part of the team watches. He wakes it up after damping spatial powers in the area and Prodigy turning its powers off. Threshold doesn't tell anyone but he thinks the skull can also dampen its powers based on what it did to Thresholds powers during the fight with Erebus. The skull and Wan Tong wanted to keep things secret and Threshold respects that idea.
When asked what to do with it the skull teleported in a messenger bag for Threshold to carry it around in.
Wirerat makes a translation collar for the cat and they have a conversation. The cat is not overly friendly but is told what is going on and seems to accept the situation. Threshold gives it fresh tuna upon request.
This may easily wind up being a very bad thing but its only fair to give the cat a chance and the team has a history of rehabbing bad guys. So it feels like the right thing, if not the wise thing.
A cat that can teleport itself or others and disintegrate things is a rather scary thing to have running around the world. On the other hand Threshold with a cat familiar gives me Gary 7 vibes and is just cool. Don't even have to buy it on Constant Appearance despite its ability to teleport. After all cats tend to be independent and like their sleep.

Get Ready to Rumble!

We start off reviewing and tweaking our plans from last session. Nyx is going to meet Erebus at Frank's Franks a street hot dog vendor and local health hazard. The rest of the team will be hiding about a quarter block away waiting for a signal. Were monitoring Nyx using radio, various powers, and our normal senses for whatever signal Nyx chooses at the time. Threshold will then portal everyone in and if that fails for some reason most can get there on their own. Nomads is a team of primarily teleporters and speedsters so it should be quick.
Threshold makes his Leadership! roll for foresight for the tactical rerolls (optional rule from Pyramid the GM wrote) but apparently does not do well enough to get any.
The GM lets everyone know their current status on Karma Points and Wildcard points for rerolls. We expect to need them.

Combat!

Nyx wheels over the chair on a dolly to where Erebus is waiting impatiently, apparently he got there a bit early. Nyx goes over the deal and is told he can go. Nyx then baits Erebus into having him test the chair first to prime the trap. This goes well then Erebus gets ready to sit in it and we all Warp in. Threshold crits his roll and the GM lets Threshold create multiple portals (effectively granting the Rapidfire enhancement), placing the party around the area saving them some movement.
Whisper, Nyx, Wirerat, Threshold, SSR, Chain Jacket, Bubbles, Impulse, and Wan Shi Tong make 9 combatants on the PC side and Erebus summons 4 constructs for 5 on the villains side.
14 combatants, a lot going on and you should check out the GMs recap when it comes out for full details. The author of this blog was trying to plan the fight and missed or forgot a lot of details.

Wirerats drones light up the area using glowworms frequency so we can all see clearly. Whisper runs up and crits Erebus in the head with her axe - Doom is invoked and she loses her axe, but damage is taken.
SSR shoots his autocannon and Erebus fails to dodge - Doom invoked again.
Doom was invoked a lot here, the GM had a bad day for defense rolls!
Everyone else takes their attack and Erebus summons four minions to deal with us. Eventually Threshold takes his shot and crits with his Obliteration Beam but a minion power parries (more Doom invoked). Erebus power dodges using his teleport around the battlefield to avoid incoming fire and Threshold uses his Escher Bubble (Obscure plus Slow Move on a 4 yard radius) hoping to limit his movement and vision but he Warps out as a Dodge.
Erebus tries to dissolve Bubbles but Threshold manages to use Power Defense with Exoport to get her safely away (spent wildcard to do that and she's out of the battle). Chainjacket, Bubbles, and SSR entrap a minion. Whisper picks up her axe and takes out another minion.
Nyx is at a bit of a disadvantage (darkness vss. darkness) and things not looking too good for the good guys and does something to the chair. It had been slowly sucking the power out of Erebus but now starts to pump him up. Wirerat figures out it went wrong, Threshold is positive it went exactly right (failed Per based Science!).
Since the last Power Dodge* got Erebus next to the chair Threshold tries to block his teleporting using his ability to control Space, erecting a -10 skill selective teleport block in a 10y radius (most of the battle map).
*How is he doing that multiple times a turn anyhow? GM said we could buy that too. Limited ATR seems unlikely as the GM strictly limits that, variant Trained by Master? Seems to not be taking multiple penalties

Erebus starts growing as the darkness throughout the city is channeled into him and local darkness gets more intense so most of us cannot see.
Wan Shi Tong pulls out something that doubles Thresholds block. Whisper runs into the corrosive darkness aura Erebus had put up and is hurt pretty bad. Her attack bounces off his armor upgrade and she smartly runs out of the aura (a couple yards radius). Nyx uses darkness tentacles but they do little to no damage as well. SSRs chain guns do manage to do some damage.
Threshold decides its time to finish things and for the second time(?) in the campaign pulls out his Singularity power. He cant see Erebus but knows where he was last and creates the center about 10 feet up from there. Hoping the distance will minimize the attraction on everyone else, and the street.
It works and Erebus takes enough damage that he screams.
The chair is sucked into the hole and something weird happens. Rather than being destroyed the power chair merged with the singularity, creating some form of Khyberic tornado. Threshold tries to cancel it but can't. He runs over to his old friend Wan who he now sees was wounded. Wan is severely hurt and dissolving into the tornado, even though he is out of the wind from the singularity effect. He makes a dying declaration and hands Threshold a crystal skull. "This is yours now, take care of it and ask do not demand its help". Wan then dissolves in Thresholds arms.
Threshold asks the skull for help and is surprised when it answers telepathically. Rolling with it Threshold quickly explains the situation, the skull in a fatherly tone says it can see and understand then it says they need to get closer. Threshold holds it tight against his chest and walks into the tornado, knowing there is not much time to stop it. Nyx sees what is happening and using his shadow whips tries to tether Threshold to keep him from being sucked in. SSR uses a grappling gun and helps too. The skull does something and and cancels the khyberic tornado.
Threshold does not believe in ghosts, so thanks what he figures is a telepathic A.I. and quickly hides it.

Aftermath

A good long fight and epic end to a long build up. Were skipping a week ahead next session and then going after more Ryker escapees.
Threshold lost his mentor and long time friend, several people were hurt but the day was saved. Threshold will be talking to the skull and likely find out some of what the player knows about its history - including that it is one of a large set. There are 13 crystal skulls in the campaign, each representing a fundamental power set (think infinity stones or Realm Magic). I think based on what it did and that Wan said in his dying breath that he always knew it was eventually going to Threshold this is the "Space" skull. It seems like a big coincidence that it synchs with Thresholds powers but destiny is a thing and these skulls have a lot of power and can sense related powers so it could have talked and moved its way into this opportunity.
Not sure if Threshold is going to keep it, hide it, or what yet. But definitely going to be asking it questions. GM heads up, going to be asking it about that weird pocket watch!
No upgrades or character points spent during the break so probably be a few years before I put any points into the things that happened recently. After this season ends we move on to the GMs fantasy campaign then likely his monster hunter campaign.
Threshold though besides the usual skill and power improvements understands khyberic energy (source of powers) so that's a skill to get - possibly Weird Science. He may work on power effecting gadgets based on that.  The skull and pocket watch may lead to more or improved skills and powers.
Actually been thinking how to build something like the crystal skulls the last two days and think have some simple but useful baseline ideas.
Naturally the GM probably has ideas too, if not already a template.
Sad to lose his friend, but it didn't have as much emotional or story impact as the guy was never really fleshed out or played.

Session 7? What happened to 5 and 6?!

If you have been following along you may be wondering what happened. Session 4 was July 3rd and a lot of stuff has come up causing us to skip games since. When the two did occur they were very short and I also had no computer for about a month. Sorry for lack of reporting but here is a short recap.
Session 5 was mostly a recap of session 4, some retcons on what people were doing and how long they took doing them.
Session 6 Lynch (from Season 7) knocked on our door to tell us about a secret experiment in the Adirondack mountains in upstate NY.  We filed in a seaplane docked a few miles away and flew to the hidden base to check things out. Some discussion was about how we handled transportation, since many of us can teleport some felt we should go to the edge of the darkness, walk across the border, then teleport to the location.

Another Covert MetaPowers Program

Lynch explains that this was a covert program using darkness manipulators for special operations. Nox was part of the program, as was Erebus.  Apparently Erebus stole the powers of most of the others before being captured and Nox was the only one to escape.
We arrive with Threshold, Whisper, Nox and Nyx, Wan Shi Tong, and Lynch.
Nox has the keycode and entry is easily secured. Heading in we are stalked by creatures of darkness from a dead darkness manipulator "Grue" who says he is someones memory and not real. We find his mummified remains inside, so Threshold decides to take him at his word and gives up trying to save him. There is a chair that boosts supers powers, currently tuned to darkness manipulators.  It effectively is a khyberic fission bomb that can permanently boost your powers - if you live.

Grue tells us that Erebus wants the device to boost his power, Lynch confirms this and says its our only hope as it should boost his powers so much that it pops him like a balloon and kills him.
Threshold is less than pleased with this strategy.
Threshold examines the device (Science! -21 with Pararadar and scanning plus other modifiers) and crits with a natural 3. He now knows exactly how the device works and is confident he can retune it to neutralize Erebus powers permanently using the negative orichalcum that he has back at base.
He tells the team about this new option and they debate it's merits.
Player invokes Thresholds foible "Prove they are wrong"; inspired by that crit success I felt he was all in on using the device.

Threshold offers to tune the device to "safely" boost Nyx's powers but Nyx declines. Threshold internally considers the others but decided that Nox is too unstable, Threshold has enough power already and what he needs most is more control and refinement over it. Threshold can channel khyberic energy to boost his powers as needed already and fears he might lose control with a sudden larger power boost. Whisper is a super soldier and they tend to be unstable and ride a knifes edge on keeping power, dying, or simply going crazy so that is also out. Similar with Wan Shi Tong.
There is a risk that anyone could die, though Threshold is confident (in a mad scientist sort of way) that he can control things to avoid that effect. But no one really wants to try it and for the reasons above that plan is quickly dropped.
Besides the crit success on Science! Threshold has specifically studied metahumans writing two scientific papers, plus working with other experts over the years.

Whisper announces her plan to shoot the device, Threshold tells her its basically a nuclear bomb and that just shooting it is a bad idea. Threshold disassembles the device and they take it back with them, planning to use it to neutralize Erebus powers.
As they leave Whisper borrows a hand grenade from Lynch to destroy the device as soon as everyone leaves the room. Threshold is less than thrilled as no one had declared the device fully safe from exploding or causing massive collateral damage if destroyed.
The team takes files from a computer, Lynch looked at the files, Whisper looked over his shoulder and SiR hacked and copied the computer files.

Nyx is informed by his ghost friend* that Lynch is possessed by Erebus before we leave, though after plans have been discussed.
As we arrive back at the base Nyx lets the ghost capture Lynch and tie him up in the closet.
*Grue gave up his "afterlife" to lend his powers to Nyx and now Nyx can see and talk to the darkness creatures Grue could make. The rest of the team doesnt really know this yet (to my knowledge) and thinks Grue is still around.

Aftermath

Another very short game, one of the players was sick and once we reached a decent stopping point the game was called. Nyx did not tell anyone about the possession so that's a big trap waiting to happen. He likely will next game when the player is feeling better, so we can try and make up for the plan being revealed to the enemy.
I have a counter plan ready. The best plan would have been to just go with the plan of Lynch to give the chair to Erebus and hope it blew him up after secretly being modified. We can't do that now though.

It was a fun game, though short and a bit frustrating in some respects. I liked getting that crit, and rolled with it. Threshold now knows how to build this kind of device and will discuss it with Wirerat and Prodigy for how best to weaponize it.

A Minor Retcon

Threshold is kept at Mt Sinai treating patients. He manages to pop out to grab a few medical people but is mostly working the ER. The pharmacy security camera is adjusted so that he has ready access to it and the pharmacy places various medications, dressings, and other materials on the counter. Threshold can then teleport them to the ER to speed things up.

Busy Bees

Threshold is helping out in the hospital, Wirerat is working on the data being fed to him, and Nyx is handling the patrols of Flushing.
Whisper is incommunicado, probably trying to work with MAPS HQ and the intelligence community.
Nyx comes in for lunch and talks with Nox who has been gently helped so far by Wirerat.

Aftermath

Another short session. Lots of roleplaying and were getting worried on who is trying to deal with the actual threat of Erebus.

The Coming Darkness

The team is going about its routine when a cloud of darkness permeates the building. Looking around the darkness appears to cover most of NYC and it affects all senses, not just light. Most senses are reduced to 1/10 range, though Nyx is largely unaffected.
Communications become spotty as well and the group figures out its a powerful darkness manipulator named Erebus, His power can cover such a large area and feels about right for what is going on, he also can summon beings from another dimension and if the power lasts long enough he can drain other peoples powers - adding them to his own.
Threshold teleports about a thousand feet up to get a view of things but is still in darkness so teleports even further up until he can see that the dome of darkness appears to be centered in Manhattan. He then teleports back to base, shedding momentum from the fall as he does.
He reports his findings to the rest of the group and MAPS HQ.

Please Stand By

MAPS HQ informs the team that they need to stand down and remain on call for if they are needed. Another team will handle Erubus.
Nyx heads out to check on Flushing and get residents safely home.
Wirerat and Threshold try working on communications or sensors that will work better. Wirerat comes up with a brain induction helmet that can tap into Thresholds brain and sees what he sees as he tries various scans. He also has MIA build up an interactive digital map we can use to move around and update it in real time.
Nox is somehow terrified of the darkness and hides in Wirerats lab. Possibly she fears losing her powers.

Search and Rescue

Nyx has been finding people and teleporting them back home, trying to keep them from panicking.
Threshold, after giving the information he can to Wirerat heads out to help Nyx with getting people off the streets. He finds a woman being attacked by some fanged creature, orders it to leave her alone but it attacks him. He tries to obliterate it but only manages to destroy an arm and part of its torso and it keeps coming. He dodges and Nyx appears and grabs it with his shadow whips trying to keep it off Threshold. Threshold uses his powers again adn this time obliterates enough of the creature that it dies. As it turns into shadow goo they both briefly examine it and feel its one of Erebus extradimensional creatures.
Threshold radios the find to MAPS HQ who inform him they have ben popping up all over.
Threshold portals the woman to Mt. Sinai (not the closest hospital but the one he works at) and the ER is packed and shrouded. He puts the woman on a gurney, calls for aid and using his powers preforms emergency surgery to save her life.
While doing so he sees that a meta is glowing and seending out little balls of light throught the room to help people see.
After the surgery he goes and talks to the meta and tries to analyze the powers since they seem to be helpful and penetrate the darkness better than ordinary light. He gives the details to Wirerat back at Nomad base. Threshold then heads to the admin desk to get a list of medical people on call and goes looking for them to bring them to the hospital. After finding everyone he can, around an an hour later he heads over to Prysbertian Hospital in Flushing and does the same for them before going back out to help Nyx with search and rescue.

OOC Notes

Short game due to the storms but it felt like we kept very active and got stuff done.

Dates: Friday May 8th to Saturday May 9th.

Please Stand By

The Nomads (our team) has been told to stand by for instructions as we are among the most mobile of the NYC teams and have more teleporters than anyone else.
Threshold is a solid group teleporter using his portals, and Nyx can take at least one person when he teleports. Nox and Bubbles can also teleport, and we think Impulse can as well (not seen him in action yet). That is 4 or 5 teleporters on one team. Plus even those who cannot teleport tend to be pretty mobile with some form of enhanced speed.
Threshold stays in constant contact but still patrols and helps out at the hospital as A) its his job; and B) with the emergency there are a lot more injuries at the moment. He figures he should be helping rather than stay at the base and he can portal back to HQ in a few seconds. Also he still seems to not need to sleep. (Forgot to ask the GM if that was still in effect). He also finished analyzing the fragments of orichalcum and it turned out to be what the player guessed from the initial effects. Samples are logged and put in a safe for when we have time for more study. Meantime gave the info to Wirterat so he can scan for them in case there are more around.
Bubbles and most of the team also go on patrol, especially the non-teleporters.
Wirerat is still on bedrest from his recurring brain trauma,
Many on the team are a little antsy at being sidelined but pretty much toe the line.

Nyx and Prodigy go to her fathers safety deposit box and check out the contents. He gets some records which are handed over to Wirerat to go over.
MIA is monitoring all the communications and cameras in the area.
Whisper runs down some contacts but and mostly acts as a liaison between intelligence agencies and local government. Also works with the dogs :)
Nox goes a little homemaker/nester and cooks for Prodigy.

Emergency, Please Respond!

We get a call that Maniac, a powerful pyrokinetic is burning down a local hospital. Threshold tries to scout the area to get a safe spot to portal everyone in but the GM uses DOOM points to make this a failure. Threshold teleports into a room near Maniac and is caught in the fire. He portals to the Hudson, letting the river rush in to help put out the fire. He then pops up to the roof and creates a portal to the base HQ roof for the others to join him.
The group attacks Maniac who is more insane than evil and goes nuts when a fire is nearby.
Threshold tries to send him near the north pole (new upgrade - Affliction (HT; Exoport with lots of modifiers) but tis resisted. Maniac sets Threshold on fire who luckily only takes minor damage, and it just tingles.
Nyx suggests Fridge Boy join us. (The GM forgot about this NPC)
Fridge Boy and Maniac pretty much cancel each other out, Fridge Boy encasing him in ice as he tries to melt out. Whisper Grabs a halon extinguisher from somewhere and stuffs it in a hole that Fridge Boy opens up.
Fight was over in a few turns, whole thing took less than a minute from first encounter. We help evacuate the staff, Threshold stops the flooding by closing the portal.

Aftermath

A fast session, we started a bit early but had to shut down early as one player was on a different shift this time. Threshold got to try another one of his new abilities and the group got in a good fight where the enemy was not using heavy caliber automatic weapons, refreshing change :)
Oh and Whisper did not inflict massive head trauma on anyone!

Prison Breakout

We start the new season a few hours after the last session. Most of the prisoners from Rikers got away and the National Guard and a special federal team are on site at the prison.
The Nomads (our team) are told to be "On Call" as were one of, if not the most mobile teams in NYC.
Several members can teleport, pretty much everyone has some form of improved mobility, and of course Threshold can transport the entire team using his portals.
We have some members out on patrol to keep visibility up and reassure the citizens that were on top of things.
Wirerat is in sickbay, again. Complaining about the healthy diet.
The team is reviewing what we know, gathering more intel and distributing it.
It appears that a group planned the break out and coordinated it very quietly and well. Its possible the attacks on the team were to get blood samples for cloning, though Lindy appears to have a personal reason as well. And Threshold seems to have played an important part in their plans as they made copies of him to create some form of large field that helped facilitate the mass escape.

A few hours after the briefing MedEvac pops in to urgently request Thresholds medical skills. Turns out a high profile patient (name redacted due to Doctor/Patient privilege's) had shrapnel in the brain that prevented MedEvacs healing powers from working. Threshold uses his powers to teleport the pieces out of the brain, MedEvac can then work her magic and the patient will be fine.
He then teleports back to base with the shrapnel which hinders his powers but does not stop him.

Threshold analyzes the shrapnel, determining it is a form of Orichalcum, but silver instead of the usual gold color. It appears to be a power dampener ally instead of the usual energy producing version and it exhibits a slight vibrational frequency. He makes notes and will have Wirerat work up a detector for it when he is feeling up to the task.

Wirerat and his pet A.Is create an army of surveillance drones and hack all the local cameras and surveillance equipment.
Nyx uses his Shadow View power (Clairsentience with lots of modifiers, including Area Perception, +300%) to keep an eye on the area.

The doorbell rings and Threshold decides to check the camera and it appears to be Fracture at our our front door. He goes to talk with her and lets her in where we can all talk in relative privacy.
Fracture says she was used to help with the escape, she was forced to leave and is afraid for her life. She writes a full confession and hands it to Threshold. The only new information she can provide is that their is a mind controller involved.
We elect to hold her in our custody, Nyx suggests we deputize her and explains that will help provide her some protection from being sent back to Rikers until after the emergency is over. Threshold objects to the deputizing but accepts Nyx's argument and does it anyway. Threshold asks her about her powers, specifically if she can sense duplicates she made. She never really tried but can tell when her clones die so he asks Wan Shi Tong to work with her. Prodigy and Fridge Boy jump in to help, making a sense dep chamber to help her focus.

We end the session there. One player was already out and another had to leave for work.
The phone lines started heating up, expecting lots of action next time.

Aftermath

We need to catch some of the bad guys but obviously this was no ordinary breakout. A lot of effort went into this and so something is expected of  significant value from at least some of those freed. What those plans are is our job to figure out. However it appears this was the end game of most of Season 7, of course what happens next is likely to be a whole new ballgame.

Player Comments

I spent some points on less lethal powers, increasing Medic! a level, and getting some medical powers.
An important aspect of a super heroes game to me is the verisimilitude of characters using their powers for something other than crime fighting.
Often characters can apply their abilities to do more regular things faster or better, or otherwise be a useful member of society outside of wearing spandex.
Threshold can teleport and disintegrate things, both useful in real world applications. However he has a strong medical and scientific background and his powers let him see through solid objects and very small details (Scanning Sense, Pararadar with Microscopic 6 and Penetrating 2).
I wanted him to be able to use those powers to do surgery, and the GM let me buy the rest of that toolset,
He has Pararadar with Bioscan, Scanning,  Penetrating 2, Microscopic 6 - allowing him to act as a very good diagnostician. This gives +4 to Diagnosis and he has Medic-22 with some complimentary skills.
It also gives +4 or +2 to things like First-Aid, Forensics, Poisons, Chemistry, Bioengineering (Tissue), and several other skills. Profiling adds another +4 to some of those rolls.
Quick Gadgeteer (Medical), Photographic Memory,
Power Perks: Accessory (Surgical Tools); Expulsion; Expulsion Others; and Medical Sampler to represent teleporting things out of a body and scalpel precision disintegration.
And finally Spatial Surgery which is Healing (Affects Self, +50%; Disease and object removal only, -30%; Reliable 10, +50%; Spatial Manipulation, -20%; Xenohealing, +100%) [150] with cost CP and as an alternative ability for a cost of 6 points.
This last power I am rather proud of. His powers do not make much sense for healing people by restoring HP. But he is basically a built in medical scanner, and the fine tuned disintegration can act like radiation therapy that is more portable and far more precise than most modern medical equipment. He can disintegrate individual cells, teleport or disintegrate bullets and shrapnel. Cut away any tissue, etc.
Pretty much a walking OR, though his powers wont let him stich up or suture anything directly he can guide his hands to do the work with precision (also has Manual Dexterity 1).

I do not really expect this power to come up in game very often, his Medic! skill though is another matter. Costs CP (we use wildcard points) lets him do something very unusual as needed. Even though the campaign has healers who can regenerate flesh his power still gives him an unusual utility, as demonstrated this session.
Technically the Expulsion perk would have probably done the job, or normal use of Medic! in the operating room. But this just looked cooler and was much faster than normal surgery.
These kind of creative uses of a power set or theme really help make the world and characters more fleshed out to me.

Season 7 Session 10 & 11 End of Season!

Cast

  • Amie-Belle T. W. Lee aka Whisper (Played by Curtis): Cold War era super-soldier/spy that got put in the Freezer, because she got poisoned. After getting thawed out and cured she tried to back to work, and was given an “adjustment period”. Uncle Sam called 2 years later, with work… because once you’re in, you’re in for life. Tagline: “In and out without a whisper.”
Dates: Thursday May 7th?
Sessions combined as Session 10 was very short due to bad internet issues.

The Big Reveal

We did some tidying up and trying to figure out where to go next. We had a few leads yet to follow but nothing really panned out.  Then Threshold gets a massive headache and we hear an explosion and Session 10 ended.
Session 11 we pick up with a fight. The news tells us of three explosions and we head to the one in our jurisdiction using Thresholds portal.

Threshold, Nyx, Nox, Whisper, SSR, and Wirerat all get involved. We see a young woman, Lindy McCall surrounded by a couple of cats and rats.
Also a big hole in the ground with what looks like Threshold's obliteration beam coming out of it.
We quickly deduce that the animals are fracture clones with the powers of various metas. Perhaps a bit more quickly due to the names of the tokens ;)
Space Cat is a copy of Threshold
Wire Cat is a copy of Wirerat.
Gemini a brick and associate of Fracture (her brother) is there in rat form, as is Fracture.
The rest of our team apparently did not get copied, nor the honor of being cloned as a cat.
We are in a construction site.

Fight!

Nyx teleports under a nearby construction office. Nox teleports closer and behind the enemy on the ground. Whisper runs towards them. Wirerat scans the area nd gets his brain fried for his trouble (again). Threshold tries to obliterate Space Cat as he is off by himself and near the big hole in the ground.
Space Cat teleports away and Nox squeeks about Threshold trying to disintegrate her.
Fracture Rat makes another Gemini Rat and both of them attack Whisper.
Lindy exclaims how Threshold will now regret what he did to her father, Threshold has no clue what she is talking about, this does not go over well. (crit failed his IQ roll to recognize her)
Nyx binds Fracture Rat in darkness.
Space Cat gets Fracture Rat out of the darkness by exporting her (GM pointedly points this trick out to Thresholds player).
Hey Export is expensive!
Threshold uses his Create Singularity to try and take out Fracture Rat and make life rough for the Gemini Rats.
Our Face of Darkness (Nyx) taunts Space Cat using his clairsentience with speaking power and knocks out Lindy with Draining Touch.
Whisper enjoys herself fighting the Gemini Fractures, tossing one into the singularity and watching one miss a slam and run into the hole..
Threshold uses his Spatiokenesis Control power to try and lockdown Spacecats powers, hoping the cat has all his power but not much of his skill.
SSR tazes Space Cat who can't teleport away.

There is a big boom and the hole stops glowing. We look down into it and see a big sphere that Whisper picks up and opens up and it has a Threshold head strapped into a wire harness. Threshold says to kill it and put it out of its misery.
We hear from the radios that there is a massive breakout at Rikers Island and the session ends there.

Aftermath

This is the end of the season and so we get to spend some of our saved CP on upgrades and given the option to pick up a few hours later or a few weeks later. We opt for a few hours.
Were called to MAPS HQ to get briefed on what happened and keep Lindy as a prisoner and Nyx seems to have charmed Space Cat. Our Face of Darkness may add another villain to his retinue of converts/conscripts.

Meeting Restarted

We get back to the meeting and go over the news. Threshold kind of pushes everyone for a specific action, seemingly in a hurry.
Nyx takes Gimmick to Rikers for a follow-up with Fracture and to see if anyone knows anything about her missing father.
Whisper will check on the arms dealer, Dion "Die Die" Crawford.
Bo heads to the lab.
Impulse and Prodigy head out on patrol.
Having mostly cleared the building Threshold goes to the medical lab and gives himself a very though testing. His cells are genetically altered and exhibiting some kind of energy and "hyperactivity". He can regrow tissue, bone, etc in minutes. Also experiences no pain at all and seems to be less vulnerable to exhaustion with little or no need for sleep. He carefully documents everything and decides to test and measure the results daily to see if this state changes, remains stable, or does something else.

Junkyard Dogs

Whisper sets up a meeting for a gun buy and winds up at a junkyard in Brooklyn for the actual deal. Dion has three large dogs guarding the place, the results of an escaped lab experiment. They are highly intelligent and he has explosive collars on them to keep them under control.
While talking a sniper lights up Whisper who then bends a piece of rebar as a means of intimidation. This works really well and Dion gives over some information, though mostly its of little use. the sniper shuts off the laser targeting and vanishes. He also gets and disarms the control to the collars.
Whisper calls Threshold for an emergency exit and he comes through a portal. After a brief conversation Whisper, Threshold, and the dogs go through back to the base.
Threshold recognizes the dogs for what they are, calls Bo to set up a big keyboard for them to use to communicate, and schedules them for a quick medical evaluation. They have been mistreated and need some shots and better food.
Bo happily whips up something for the dogs and gives them speaking collars. Bo also continues sifting data and his pet AI comes up with a nifty search algorithm to help.

Back to Rikers

Nyx, and Prodigy all go to Rikers to talk with Fracture. They get a little bit more information, again using donuts as bribes. Also they some information from the guards on Prodigies father who had been acting weird lately.

Aftermath

Another short session. We broke up after this to discuss ideas for the next campaign and told to post our plans for next session in Discord so the GM can prepare the leads we take up.
